Lesson 1

TV, Drama Exam:

Analysis:
·         Mise-en-scene
·         Camerawork
·         Editing
·         Sound

Media Representation
·         The way in which people, events and places are portrayed in the media.

Representation:
·         However realistic media images seem, they never simply present the world as it is.
·         Media images are always a construction or re-representation of people, places or event.

Media Representation: Issues that are raised:
·         How do groups or situations get routinely represented in the media?
·         The media can re-present certain images or stories over and over again, making them seem ‘natural’ and familiar

Self-fulfilling prophecy:
·         The idea that people start behaving the way they are represented in the media.

Stereotyping:
·         Widely circulated ideas or assumptions about particular groups of people.
·         Usually negative judgments made on a whole group of people based on a few characteristics

TASK:
Identify any stereotypical media representations of the following groups
·         Disabled people – helpless, vulnerable, not independent, social outcasts
·         Ethnic minorities – bad, criminals, can’t communicate, drain on society, scapegoat for unemployment
·         Working class – dysfunctional
·         Women – unfaithful, sexual objects, victims/vulnerable, dependant, emotionally unstable
·         Teenagers – rebellious, lazy, trouble makers, criminals

Create a new blog for your TV Drama work.
